A Limerick man died from a knife wound to his chest at a busy Limerick roundabout at the weekend.

It's understood the 40-year-old Limerick man inflicted the fatal stab wound after he crashed the car he was driving into a grassy bank at the Roxboro roundabout on the N20 in Limerick.

A Garda patrol had attempted to stop the motorist after he was spotted driving erratically in the Rosbrien area of the city shortly before 11.30 p.m. on Saturday night.

The driver failed to stop, and accelerated before losing control of the car and crashing into the roundabout.

When gardaí got to the car, the driver - who was alone in the vehicle - locked the doors and plunged a knife into his chest. He died a short time later at Limerick Regional Hospital.

A post-mortem carried out yesterday afternoon revealed the deceased - who was married with children - had a single stab wound to his chest.

"This was a very tragic case involving someone who had a lot of tragedy in his own life," a local garda said.

The dead man, who worked as a bus driver, was from John Carew Park in the Southill area.
