The High Court has appointed a provisional liquidator to a chain of discount stores employing 69 people.

The directors of Eurprice Ltd, which has eight stores located mainly in the southeast, are seeking to have the company wound up because it is no longer able to compete with rivals and say they hope the provisional liquidator will be able to sell the business and save jobs, the court was told.

Ms Justice Mary Laffoy appointed insolvency practitioner and chartered accountant Kieran McCarthy as provisional liquidator.

Eurprice, with a registered address at the Moyne Business Park, Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, specialises in selling goods, such as cosmetics and confectionery, at the cheapest end of the price spectrum. Its directors are John Hamill, Anna Hamill and Therese Hunt. The stores are in Carlow, Kilkenny, Tallaght, Waterford, Wexford, Enniscorthy and Gorey.
