Ireland were today counting the cost of a bruising Super League derby which left five players either ruled out or doubtful for Tuesday'sinternational against France in Albi.
The Irish suffered a body blow when captain Terry O'Connor was taken to hospital with a badly-broken nose while St Helens skipper Chris Joynt,earmarked to step in as Ireland captain, sustained a knee injury.
Mick Cassidy (dead leg), Anthony Stewart (back) and Brian Carney (hamstring) were other Irish casualties from Wigan's epic 29-28 victory overthe reigning champions.
"We had six players in the game and it would have been a bit naive to think no-one would get hurt, but the casualty list is worse than we couldhave expected," said Ireland co-coach Steve O'Neill.
"Losing Terry O'Connor is a massive blow. He was the driving force behind us in the World Cup. He is great for team spirit on and off the field andis an integral part of the team."
The injured players will this morning report to the Rugby League's official doctor, who has the sole power to withdraw players from internationalsquads.
The 18-man Irish squad are due to meet up tomorrow night before flying to Toulouse on Monday.
