Four builders had a lucky escape yesterday when part of a six-storey building collapsed.
A 60ft wall at the site of the derelict Henry Cecil bar and nightclub in Limerick city collapsed at lunchtime yesterday.
Four men working on a new development adjacent to the former nightclub were inside two minutes before the collapse.
"We were inside when dust and stones started to come down. We called the foreman and he rang the other two lads who were at another part and told them to get out. Within two minutes of us getting out the whole back of the building came down," said one.
Built during the Georgian period, the former Henry Cecil nightclub - which closed several years ago - was a listed building and at one time was used as a mill. Limerick City Council recently placed a protection order on the building and ordered that the façade be maintained if it was ever to be developed again.
