LONDON - The Prime Minister hinted he would put off a general election until the last possible minute by telling Tory backbenchers: "Don't book a holiday next spring."

Mr Major has repeatedly said he would prefer to go virtually the maximum distance before going to the country, and his aside at the annual end of summer term address to the 1922 Committee last night confirms that.
