BRITAIN:A 48-year-old man was charged last night with murdering five prostitutes in Ipswich. Steve Wright, with an address in the town, is accused of killing the women, whose bodies were found in isolated locations earlier this month.
Detectives said Wright would appear before magistrates in Ipswich today.
Wright was arrested early on Tuesday at his home.
Detectives launched a murder inquiry on December 2nd when the body of Gemma Adams (25) was found. Over the next few days the bodies of Tania Nicol (19) Anneli Alderton (24) Paula Clennell (24) and Annette Nicholls (29) were discovered.
Detectives said a 37-year-old man, named by sources as Tom Stephens, had been released on police bail without charge pending further inquiries after being questioned about the murders.
Stephens was arrested at his home in Trimley St Martin, Suffolk, early on Monday. Police did not want to say when he would be required to return to a police station for further questioning.
Earlier the attorney general, Lord Goldsmith, warned media organisations to show restraint, saying police had said they were being hindered by some of the blanket coverage the case had received from newspapers and television. He said he would consider taking action should any organisation breach the law by prejudicing a possible future trial by implying an individual was guilty.
On Wednesday, a coroner adjourned inquests into the deaths of four of the prostitutes.
Suffolk coroner Peter Dean offered his condolences to the families of the dead women. He appealed to anyone with information about their deaths to contact police. No date has been set for the inquests to resume.
