Gardai told a High Court judge yesterday they feared for the safety of other women if a man, alleged to have murdered and raped a 17-year-old Co Galway woman, was released on bail. Insp Pat Connolly said that since being granted bail Mr John McDonagh had been charged with soliciting a prostitute and had been arrested in connection with an alleged serious assault on another prostitute.

The District Court in Galway had revoked bail.

Mr Justice Butler, who had earlier granted Mr McDonagh leave to legally challenge the District Court decision yesterday granted a new substitute bail of £4,000, with similar restrictive conditions as applied previously, until that challenge is determined in the High Court.

Mr McDonagh, of Demesne, Carraroe, Co Galway, is accused of the murder and rape of Ms Siobhan Hynes, whose body was found on a beach at Carraroe two years ago.
