The High Court has remanded in custody with consent to bail a 61-year-old Irish man whose extradition is being sought by the UK authorities for allegedly raping his three daughters.
The man, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, is wanted in Britain on four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault against his daughters while they were all minors.
The alleged incidents are said to have occurred in the Yorkshire area of the UK, when all three girls were aged between 16 and 9 years of age, on dates during the mid 1980s.
A number of the alleged offences are claimed to have occurred in the family home.
Yesterday at the High Court the man, who has been living at various addresses in the northeast of Ireland during the last five years, was remanded in custody with consent to bail by Mr Justice Paul Butler.
When given details of arrest, charge, and caution the court was told that the man, who is an Irish citizen, acknowledged that he was the person identified in the European arrest warrant and that he knew what the charges were about.
The court was also told that the complaints were made after he had returned to Ireland several years ago.
The court heard that the man is unemployed and in receipt of social welfare. He is living in rented accommodation.
The court was told that gardaí had a concern about the man being granted bail because of potential difficulties he might have securing an independent surety.
Noting that the charges were serious, which carried a maximum sentence of life in prison, Mr Justice Butler said these were not reasons why bail could not be granted.
The court heard that the man had fully co-operated with gardaí, and was easily contactable prior to his arrest.
He remanded the man in custody with consent to bail, on the man's own bond of €100 with an independent surety of €500.
As part of the bail conditions the man must surrender his passport, give assurances that he would not apply for travel documents, and that he would sign on daily at a designated Garda station.
Mr Justice Butler said that the man would further have to remain indoors at his current residence between the hours of midnight and 7am.
The judge also remanded the accused to appear before the a sitting of the High Court on October 10th next.
