An uncle of Brian Meehan, the Dublin man serving a life sentence for the murder of the journalist Veronica Guerin, yesterday pleaded guilty at the Special Criminal Court to money-laundering charges.

Thomas Meehan (51), of Dunmore Park, Ballymount, Dublin, admitted handling sterling bank drafts worth £148,386.34 in August and September 1996, knowing the money to be the proceeds of criminal activity.

He also pleaded guilty to handling cash and bank drafts worth £145,167 in pounds and sterling on dates in February, March and April 1996, knowing the money was the proceeds of criminal activity.

Mr Justice Barr remanded Meehan on continuing bail until May 16th when he will be sentenced.
