Man appears in court over Derry murder

A man (18) has appeared in court this morning charged with a murder in Derry last month.

A man (18) has appeared in court this morning charged with a murder in Derry last month.

Gary Meenan from Bishop's Street in the city is charged with murdering Emmett Shiels (22), a pizza delivery man, who was shot dead in the Creggan area of the city on June 24th when he became involved in an altercation with masked men. Police said he was an innocent victim.

Meenan was remanded in custody after appearing at Derry Magistrates Court.

An 18-year-old woman has already appeared in court accused with attempting to pervert the course of justice in connection with the killing.

Earlier, a 16-year-old girl was released pending a report being sent to the Public Prosecution Service.

Two other youths arrested in relation to the murder have been released without charge.
