A man was left with puncture wounds to his head after a gang attacked him with a screwdriver in an underground car park, it was confirmed today.

Police in Belfast said it appeared the attack happened as he attempted to defend his property in the secure car park of the City Gate apartments in the Main Street area of the city.

Officers said it was believed the man confronted four other men at his car at about 3 a.m. and was attacked with a screwdriver.

He was left with puncture wounds to the top of his head.  The PSNI said officers found that four cars had been broken into at the scene.

Officers have appealed for anyone in the area between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. to come forward.

Meanwhile, police have also arrested one man after a 25-year-old was stabbed in the chest in Newry.

The man was today recovering in hospital and his wounds are not believed to be life-threatening.
Police, who were called to John Mitchell's Street shortly before 2 a.m., said the man was injured in an incident at an apartment.

Officers appealed for anyone with information to contact them.
