A 24-year-old man was charged yesterday with the murder of an RUC officer who was killed in a hit-and-run incident in west Belfast at the weekend. Mr Charles Malachy Pollock, of Jerusalem Street in the Ormeau area of Belfast, is accused of murdering Reserve Constable Norman Thompson (39), a father of two.

Constable Thompson died in hospital after being struck by a car at Upper Kennedy Way at 1.30 a.m. on Saturday. He was one of several police officers attending a call in nearby Andersonstown Park West. Mr Pollock pleads not guilty to the charges. He was remanded in custody until September 18th.
