A businessman has been charged with dangerous driving causing the death of a retired schoolteacher in a crash in Co Limerick.

Jason Gormley (38), with an address at Rathlynn. Castleconnell, Co Limerick, appeared in Limerick District Court today. He was charged in connection with the death of Aidan Lawless, who died in a car crash in Co Limerick nearly two weeks ago.

Mr Lawless (53), from Clonmel in Co Tipperary had been dropping his daughter to college at the University of Limerick when his car was involved in a collision with another vehicle.

Mr Gormley, who was arrested 15 hours after the crash, was previously charged with failing to report an incident at Ahabeg, Ballysimon, Co Limerick on October 4th last.

He was today charged with dangerous driving causing the death of Mr Lawless.

Sgt Gary Thompson of Roxboro Garda Station gave evidence of formally charging Mr Gormley this afternoon. He told the court the accused made no reply to the charge.

Inspector Seamus Ruane told the court that directions had been received from the Director of Public Prosecutions that the matter was to be dealt with by trial on indictment.

Judge Tom O'Donnell adjourned the matter until October 27th. Mr Gormley was remanded in custody until that date.
