Man charged with Belfast attempted murder

A man (37) is due in court in Belfast today charged with the attempted murder of a man in a riot at the weekend.

Three people were taken to hospital after disturbances in the Whiterock area of the city.

One man is in a serious condition in hospital. It is understood he was hit about the head with a hammer during a fracas on Saturday night. Two other men sustained less serious head injuries.

A woman (17) has been charged with criminal damage, disorderly behaviour and assault. Another woman (23) was released on bail, and a second man has been freed pending a report to the DPP.

In a follow-up investigation, two PSNI officers claim they were hit by a car at Moyard Parade.

One of the officers fired a shot at the car. Police Ombudsman Nuala O'Loan is to investigate the shooting.
