Man critically ill after assault in Ballymun

A young man is critically ill in the Mater Hospital in Dublin after being seriously assaulted in Ballymun flats yesterday.

A young man is critically ill in the Mater Hospital in Dublin after being seriously assaulted in Ballymun flats yesterday.

The 19-year-old Dublin man was attacked shortly before 3 a.m. at the second block of flats on Coultry Road.

The scene has been preserved for examination.

Gardaí at Ballymun have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

They do not know how many culprits were involved. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Ballymun Garda station on 01 - 666 4400.

Meanwhile, a 42-year-old man was arrested at Market Square in Balbriggan early on Sunday morning, following an incident outside a local supermarket.

Gardaí responded to a call about criminal damage just after 4 a.m. and arrived to see a man smashing windows.

When approached, the man threatened gardaí with a handgun and also threatened passers-by.

No shots were fired during the incident and no one was injured.

He remains in custody at Balbriggan Garda station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
