A man died this evening when his car collided with a bus carrying 27 schoolchildren in Co Donegal.

A man died this evening when his car collided with a bus carrying 27 schoolchildren in Co Donegal.

The crash occurred on the Letterkenny to Ballybofey road at around 4.35pm. The driver of the car, a 34-year-old Donegal man, was pronounced dead at Letterkenny General Hospital, a short time later.

The Bus Éireann bus, which was carrying 29 people on a regular run from Derry to Donegal Town, overturned in the collision.

Some 27 passengers were students of the Royal and Prior Secondary School in Raphoe, one pupil was taken to Letterkenny General with minor injuries, the other 26 were removed to hospital as a precaution but are not thought to be injured. A man in his 70's was taken to hospital with minor injuries and the bus driver was uninjured.

The road at the scene of the crash remains closed while Gardai carry out a forensic crash scene investigation and is expected to remain closed for a number of hours,

Gardaí said the main Ballybofey to Letterkenny road has been closed. The scene has also been preserved pending a technical examination.

Motorists travelling between Ballybofey and Letterkenny were advised to detour via Lifford.
