People on a busy shopping street in Dublin ’s city centre watched in horror when a man involved in a fight fell into the roadway and was killed by a bus last night.
The incident happened shortly before 6pm at the junction of Dawson Street and Nassau Street, close to Trinity College. The street was full of Thursday night shoppers, many of whom witnessed the man being struck by a doubledecker bus.
Reports suggest an altercation involving three men had been taking place outside a shop on Dawson Street.
The man who died appears to have lost his balance and fallen out on to the street, where he was hit by a bus turning around the corner from Dawson Street on to Nassau Street.
The other two men who had been involved in the altercation fled the scene, according to gardaí.
Postmortem
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. A postmortem will be carried out.
CCTV cameras in the street and on the bus are expected to assist the Garda investigation.
A separate Dublin Bus investigation is to take place alongside the Garda inquiry and it is understood the bus driver has already given a statement.
Nassau Street, Dawson Street and Cuffe Street were closed to traffic after the incident, leading to serious traffic congestion. The bus remained at the scene for several hours and a number of streets were still closed off last last night.
Gardaí have appealed for witnesses with any information to contact them.
