A west Belfast man has been found guilty of killing two children by dangerous driving.

Wayne Johnston (44), formerly from the Highfield estate, Belfast, was convicted by a jury at Belfast Crown Court of causing the deaths of Christopher Shaw (11) and Emma Lynch (8) by dangerous driving on the Springfield Road in December 2003.

The children had been out walking a dog when Johnston lost control of his car and mounted the pavement before ploughing into them.

The jury of 10 men and one woman deliberated for three-quarters of an hour before convicting Johnston.

They also convicted Johnston, formerly from the Highfield estate in north Belfast, of causing grievous bodily harm to the dead boy's 13-year-old brother, Darren.

During the two-week trial the jury had heard evidence of how Johnston lost control of his Vauxhall Astra car on the Springfield Road on December 19th, 2003

Speaking outside Belfast Crown Court after the verdict Mrs Shaw, whose son Christopher was killed, said: "I just want to say that he has given every member of the Lynch and Shaw families a life sentence so hopefully, he will get what he is duly entitled to, the maximum sentence because we have to live with this for the rest of our lives so we do not see why he should not."

Mr Justice Morgan remanded Johnston in custody and adjourned sentencing until later next month when pre-sentence probation reports are compiled.
