A man who sexually abused his girlfriend's daughter for four years was jailed for 10 years yesterday by Judge Cyril Kelly, who described him as a "danger to children" and "irredeemable".

Judge Kelly was told the victim's mother had kept in contact with the 50- year-old defendant despite his crimes.having unlawful carnal knowledge of the girl in 1996 and to four charges of sexually assaulting her between 1992 and 1996. The girl was aged nine to 13. The offences took place in Dublin.

Judge Kelly refused to fix a review date for the sentence, saying any other daughter would be at risk from the defendant. He noted the man had been jailed in Britain in 1976 fur sexually assaulting his natural daughter but was released after serving 21/2 years.

A Garda sergeant said the defendant had been living with the victim's mother. The offences came to light when the girl went to the gardai.
