Man held after 'petrol' incident

A man has been arrested in relation to a suspected petrol bomb attack in Castlebar Garda station overnight.

A man has been arrested in relation to a suspected petrol bomb attack in Castlebar Garda station overnight.

The suspect, in his mid-20s, walked into Castlebar Garda station, in Co Mayo, at around 4am today and threw a “flamed object”, gardaí said.

The device was thrown at a hatch in the station which was closed at the time.

Two gardaí who were on duty at the time chased the man as he fled. He was later caught a short distance away and taken to Westport Garda station where he is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Gardaí said the man was known to them. Castlebar Garda station suffered some smoke damage and has been temporarily closed. There were no injuries.
