A young man was brought before a judge in handcuffs yesterday after gardaí discovered that he had come to court with a knife concealed in the sole of one of his runners.
The 18-year-old west Dublin man is being held in Cloverhill Prison on remand in connection with a number of separate alleged offences.
He was brought to the Dublin Children's Court yesterday where he is facing sentence on a different charge of escaping from lawful custody which occurred earlier this year when he was aged 17 and still a juvenile.
When the case was called, Garda Mathew McKenna of the Bridewell Garda station asked Judge David Anderson for permission to keep the man handcuffed. "My application is for him to be handcuffed in court. He is an extreme risk," he said. Judge Anderson consented to the application.
Garda McKenna told the court that while the prisoner was searched in a holding cell yesterday morning a knife was found in one of his runners.
He was then arrested and charged with possession of an offensive weapon.
Judge Anderson remanded the man in custody for one week. At a court appearance earlier this year, the man who is facing a number of charges including a car hi-jacking and another involving an alleged stabbing, was also in handcuffs amid security concerns.
