GARDAI have released a man detained in connection with a fatal stabbing in Dublin city early yesterday. A file in the case is being sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The body of a 37-year-old man killed in the stabbing incident at a flat in the north city early yesterday was discovered by ambulance workers, who were called to the flat at Phibsborough Road at about 4.40 a.m.
Gardai who arrived shortly after preserved the scene for examination for forensic experts. They also took a number of implements, including knives, for laboratory tests.
A man in his mid-40s, who lived at the flat, was arrested under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, which allows him to be held for up to 12 hours. He was arrested at the scene and taken to Mountjoy Garda station for questioning. He was released at 5.15 p.m.
Gardai were withholding the name of the dead man until today, as family members had to be notified. A post-mortem is due to take place today, but an initial examination suggests the man died of a single stab wound to the body.
The deceased man lived at the flat with another man, in his mid-40s. Witness statements were taken from residents in the three other flats in the house and from other neighbours.
Det Supt Cormac Gordon, one of the senior officers in the investigation, said the stabbing was not crime-related and appeared to have arisen out of a domestic argument.
A next-door neighbour said it was a quiet area and there normally was never any trouble. He said his wife thought she might have heard a loud thump during the night but nothing else.
He added that he did not know the deceased man. "There were so many people coming in and out of the flats. They were always changing ownership from week to week."
