A Limerick man who attempted to escape custody while in handcuffs has been jailed for six months.
James Price (20), Salvia Court, Keyes Park, pleaded guilty to a charge of attempting to escape lawful custody at Merchant's Quay on August 23rd last.
Limerick District Court heard yesterday that Price made his escape attempt after appearing before the same court earlier that day in relation to a criminal damage matter which was adjourned. He was remanded in custody to Limerick Prison and was being transported back to the prison when he tried to flee.
Insp Séamus Gallagher said yesterday that Price - who has a number of previous convictions - only made it to nearby Nicholas Street, where he was apprehended by gardaí.
Solicitor John Devane described his client's attempt for freedom as a "moment of madness" and said his client did not know why he took flight.
Before jailing Price, Judge Tom O'Donnell heard evidence of two other charges which the defendant also admitted.
Price pleaded guilty to a charge of criminal damage and to a minor assault charge on December 17th last.
The court heard yesterday that he kicked in the front door of his mother's house on Hyde Road and assaulted his mother, Rosaleen Moore, the same day.
