A Belfast man was jailed for 6 1/2 years yesterday for having a gun he used to protect himself during the murder of former INLA chief Hugh Torney.

Liam McAnoy (23), from Leeson Street, west Belfast, was shot in the stomach when he and Torney were ambushed by two gunmen in Lurgan on September 3rd, 1996. Although wounded, McAnoy managed to fire four shots from his revolver at the gunmen who killed Torney.

Mr Justice Girvan jailed him for 8 1/2 years, but the sen- tence was reduced by two years when he agreed to go on probation following his release.
