A MAN AGED 31 has been killed in a road crash in north Tipperary, just miles from where three teenagers lost their lives on New Year's Eve. Gardaí last night named the man as Daniel Fogarty from William Street, Nenagh.
His 1999-registered green Subaru Impreza crashed into a tree at Latteragh.
The crash occurred at about 1.30pm just after a sweeping left-hand bend close to Younge's Pub, a well-known landmark in the area.
Skid marks on the road appeared to indicate that the car veered across the road after coming around the bend and mounted a banked grass verge before colliding with a tree.
The crash is similar to the one which claimed the lives of three teenagers on New Year's Eve on the Nenagh-Dolla road at Kilboy, when the car in which they were travelling also struck a tree. Kilboy is just five miles from Latteragh.
The man, whose name is not being released until all relatives have been informed, was travelling from Nenagh in the direction of Thurles and was just a short distance from his family home when the crash occurred.
Emergency services went to the scene, but the man, who was single and was well-known in the area, was pronounced dead on arrival at Nenagh hospital.
The road remained closed throughout yesterday as forensic investigators carried out a detailed inspection of the scene.
Locals were shocked that the accident took place less that 24 hours after the three teenage victims of the New Year's Eve road tragedy were buried.
