A mysterious explosion at a former Nazi party parade grounds in the southern German city of Nuremberg has left one man dead.

Local police spokesman Mr Peter Schnellinger said the explosion had rocked a giant hall at the grounds late yesterday evening and that the body had been found in the rubble this morning. It has not been identified.

He said investigators did not suspect an attack but they did not yet have an explanation for the blast, which caused the collapse of walls and the ceiling in the southern part of the hall.

The northern section of the building, which contains an exhibition on Nazi propaganda, was not damaged.
