A 43-year-old man has appeared in court charged in connection with the discovery of a mortar device in a house in the Bogside, Derryon Monday.

Mr Anthony Thomas Friel, unemployed, from Elmwood Terrace in Derry, was charged with possessing a Mark-16 mortar, a launch tube and a firing pack with intent to endanger life. He was also charged with possessing the same items under suspicious circumstances.

Limavady Magistrate's Court was toldthat in answer to the first charge, the defendant replied "I know nothing about them" and in reply to the second charge he said "I am not aware of any of the items you are talking about".

A PSNI detective constable told the court thatthroughout his police interviews, Mr Friel had consistently denied all knowledge of the items.

The defendant was remanded in custody to appear before Derry Magistrates Court on November 21st.
