The ex-husband of a nurse who was strangled to death in Co Antrim was remanded in custody today accused of her murder.

Joseph Haveron (55), appeared at Belfast Magistrates' Court charged with the murder of Pauline Haveron, whose body was discovered at her home in Ballyclare last month.

Mr Haveron, of Farm Lodge Grove, Greenisland, Co Antrim, spoke only to confirm he understood the charge.

Defence lawyer Fergal McElhatton told the court Mr and Mrs Haveron married in 1979 and separated around 2002 when she began a new relationship. He argued there was no direct evidence linking his client to the crime.

Mr Haveron was refused bail after police claimed there was a potential risk he may not turn up for trial.
