The 32-year-old man was struck when bullets were fired through the extension of a house in the Colepark area in Ballyfermot in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The area was sealed off to allow for a Garda technical examination, and officers conducted house-to-house inquiries.

Neighbours raised the alarm and gardaí and paramedics were on the scene within minutes. The Garda helicopter was also called.

It is thought the attacker gained access to the back through a neighbour's garden.

It is the second shooting in the Ballyfermot area in less than a week, although it is unclear, as yet, if the two shootings are related.

On Tuesday last, a man was shot three times in the leg in Cedarbrook Avenue, Ballyfermot, at about 9.30am.

He was taken to hospital, where he needed emergency surgery.

His attacker, who wore a balaclava, made his getaway in a green Nissan Micra. The car was abandoned nearby.

Gardaí are asking anybody with information on either shooting to contact Ballyfermot Garda station on 01-6667200.
