A 21-year-old man who allegedly broke into a house armed with a knife and a hammer was himself stabbed and taken to hospital early this morning.

The man was caught by gardai in the kitchen of a neighbouring house after he was chased by the occupant of another house which was burgled.

Gardai said they received a call shortly before 4am that a house in Templeview Row, Clarehall, Dublin 13, had been broken into and that a man had been caught.

"On arrival at scene Coolock Gardaí found a badly injured male who had sustained stab wounds lying on the kitchen floor of a house on Templeview Row," a Garda spokesman said.

"He was taken to Beaumont Hospital where he is being treated at present. His condition is not believed to be life threatening." It is believed that two men broke into the house on Templeview Row armed with a knife and a hammer.

The occupants, a couple and their three children, were threatened and a small amount of cash and some electrical items were taken.

"The man of the house chased them and a confrontation took place which continued outside the house. This struggle ended up in the kitchen of the neighbouring house where the culprit remained until gardaí arrived," the spokesman added. The man of the house received minor injuries and the woman sustained cuts to her hand which required stitches. No arrests have been made.
