A man stabbed a Garda sergeant before killing himself after an incident outside a nightclub in Fermoy, Co Cork early this morning.
The man (26) had apparently been refused entry to the club.
The Garda sergeant was attacked by the man after being called to the scene of the incident. He was trying to disarm the man when he was stabbed at least once in the stomach.
The man, who was armed with at least two knives, fled the scene. He later stabbed himself despite pleas from his family to give himself up.
A Garda spokesman said the man died from his injuries while the sergeant's injuries are not life threatening.
He underwent surgery at Cork University Hospital today and is understood to be in a stable condition.
