Gardaí have named Mr Seamus Byrne as the man who drowned last night while trying to help divers in difficulty off the coast of Clare.

Byrne (38), who lived in Kilkee, Co Clare, had gone to assist three divers who were driven close to rocks in heavy seas near Kilkee shortly after 6 p.m. yesterday.

He was taken from the sea by the local lifeboat, but attempts to revive him failed. One of the divers was rescued and the other two made it back to shore.
