Marching season costs North £l3m

THE cost of policing the North's marching season is higher than anticipated

THE cost of policing the North's marching season is higher than anticipated. Instead of an additional £10 million, tlie police authority needs £13 million.

Yesterday the British exchequer warned it would not provide the extra money, most of which resulted from RUC overtime bills for July and August.

British treasury minister Mr Michael Jacks, speaking in Belfast yesterday, said he did not believe the treasury coffers, "can be further opened" to bail out the police authority.

Mr Pat Armstrong, authority chairman, said the heavy bill made it "all the more important that the review of parades and marches receives everyone's support".
