Hundreds of people today attended a special mass in memory of a Catholic postman shot dead in a sectarian killing exactly one year ago.

Daniel McColgan (20), was gunned down by the Ulster Freedom Fighters as he arrived for work at the Royal Mail sorting office in the loyalist Rathcoole area on the outskirts of north Belfast.

His death sparked a wave of revulsion and mass rallies organised by trades unions demanding an end to sectarianism were attended by tens of thousands of people in towns and cities across Northern Ireland.

Today's mass was held at the Whitehouse Catholic Church where his funeral service took place.

Later a simple memorial plaque bearing his name was unveiled beside his home in the Longlands area of Newtownabbey.

The loyalist killers lay in wait for Mr McColgan when he arrived late for work at the sorting office after spending the previous night working as a part-time DJ at a party.

He had taken on the second job to earn extra money after he and girlfriend Lyndsay Milliken had a baby daughter, Bethany.

Mr and Mrs McColgan expressed their sorrow their son won't see his "beautiful daughter" grow up.
