Fire stations in Co Mayo have been occupied tackling bog and forest fires over the past three days, writes Tom Shiel.

Fire stations in Co Mayo have been occupied tackling bog and forest fires over the past three days, writes Tom Shiel.

Nine of the county’s 12 stations were dealing with the fires, which mostly affected the east and south of the region, according to the Mayo chief fire officer, Séamus Murphy.

Mr Murphy said conditions were tinder dry due to the fine weather and appealed to the public to exercise extra caution as regards fires.
