McAleese sends condolences to Saudi people

President McAleese has conveyed her condolences to the Saudi people on the death of King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud.

In a message to his brother, King Abdullah, the President said: "King Fahd was a great statesman who helped guide the peaceful development of his country and his place in history is well assured.

"I know too that his closeness to his people means that they will retain the warmest affection for him.

"The people of Ireland join with me in assuring you that our thoughts are with you as you take on the mantle of kingship of a nation which is the home of the great religion of Islam and which has a vital role to play in ensuring that the world understands its true message," the statement said.
