James McCartan has been appointed manager of the Down senior footballers.
He has named a high-powered back-room team, including former All-Ireland winning Tyrone trainer Paddy Tally and Brian McIver, who took Ballinderry to an All-Ireland club title and Donegal to the 2007 NFL.
The appointment was expected and is for three years having been ratified by this evening’s county committee meeting.
McCartan played on the Down teams that won All-Irelands in 1991 and 1994. He was twice an All Star, 1990 and ’94, and represented Ireland in the successful 1990 international rules series in Australia.
