GAA news: Justin McCarthy will return to the intercounty hurling scene in the coming days when he is confirmed as Limerick's new hurling manager. The former Waterford boss will replace Richie Bennis on Shannonside.

His appointment is due to be ratified at a meeting of the county board tomorrow night.

McCarthy parted company with Waterford in the wake of their exit from the Munster championship in June after seven years in charge. During that time, Waterford won three Munster titles and a National League but were unable to reach an All-Ireland final.

Elsewhere, former Kildare footballer Glenn Ryan is expected to be named as Longford's new manager at a meeting of the Longford board later tonight.

Ryan, who took the Kildare under-21s to the All-Ireland final this year, will succeed Luke Dempsey in the job.
