Former Tánaiste Michael McDowell will today make a rare public appearance since dramatically leaving politics more than a year ago.

The former Progressive Democrats leader will speak about combating terrorism, at the World Bar Conference in Dublin Castle.

The former Justice Minister will share a platform with academics on the subject entitled The Lawyer’s Role in the Fight Against Terror.

The discussion will be chaired by Supreme Court judge Mr Justice Adrian Hardiman. Other speakers at the Bar Conference include President Mary McAleese, Archbishop of Dublin Dr Diarmuid Martin and Middle East war correspondent Robert Fisk.

Senior judges and law lecturers from Ireland, Northern Ireland, Britain and South Africa will also contribute to today’s event.

A concluding session of the Conference will be held in Belfast tomorrow.
