Irish pair Paul McGinley and Padraig Harrington posted fine rounds at the European PGA Championship today but had to play second fiddle to Argentine Angel Cabrera.

Cabrera used his phenomenal length off the tee to equal the Wentworth course record of 63 and take an early three-shot lead.

Cabrera smashed a drive 325 yards on the long 12th hole to add an eagle to his haul of seven birdies and move to nine-under-par in the first round.

He was three shots ahead of McGinley and four in front of Harrington, and Britain's Steve Webster.

Cabrera was back in the sort of form that earned him his maiden title earlier in the season, the Argentina Open, and saw him leading the U.S. Masters during the third round at Augusta.
