A member of the Shell-to-Sea Campaign has been taken to hospital after being injured at a protest at Shell's Corrib gas terminal site in Co Mayo.

Maura Harrington suffered her injuries after she fell backwards, banging her head, after a surge in Garda lines against the protesters.

She was treated at the scene by local Mayo independent TD Dr Jerry Cowley before being transferred by ambulance to Mayo General Hospital.

The Shell-to-Sea group has been staging the demos at the Bellanaboy site since October 3rd.

Up to 110 gardaí are on duty at the protest every day, and the number jumped to 170 on one occasion last week. The officers escort a convoy of vehicles carrying workers onto the terminal site near Belmullet.

Dr Cowley told ireland.comtoday that the "local community are under attack" and questioned the worth of a terminal that would create just 50 full-time jobs in the area. "Social services in the village can do that," he said.

Last night, four north Mayo men were released by gardaí following their arrests at yesterday's protest.

Three of the four arrested by gardaí were released without charge, and a file is to be prepared for the DPP. A large crowd had gathered outside Belmullet Garda Station last night when a fourth man was released shortly after 7pm.
