Hewlett Packard chief executive officer Ms Carly Fiorina said her company's planned $25 billion merger with Compaq is a strategic move rather than a response to the economic slowdown in the US.
In a press conference, Ms Fiorina said the planned tie-up is a "game-changing move" for the IT industry.
"And we are playing to win," she added.
Addressing worries that the planned tie-up may face regulatory hurdles in Europe, the HP chief executive said the two companies would work in a "co-operative" way with EU authorities.
