Corporate response: Business people, academics and shop workers have all responded to the plea for funds for the victims of the disaster.
The pharmaceutical company, Pfizer, is donating more than €26 million to the tsunami appeal in funds, medicines and logistical support.
It is now believed that the Limerick businessman, Mr JP McManus, has donated €2 million to various aid agencies.
University of Limerick authorities have established a relief fund and will be sending the donations to the Irish Red Cross, GOAL, Concern and Trócaire. The university president, Prof Roger Downer, has donated a day's salary to the fund and invited colleagues to do the same.
The various television and phone companies behind the You're A Star programme on RTÉ said all the proceeds from last night's voting process, excluding the tax, would go to Concern, Trócaire and GOAL.
Construction firm Arcon, Rohan and Logan has donated €25,000 to the Irish Red Cross Asia appeal. During the weekend, Tesco staff hosted collections at its 85 stores, with the support of the Irish Red Cross.
Restaurants Association of Ireland members are being asked to donate their gross profits from trading next Friday to the tsunami disaster fund.
Already, Montys of Katmandu, in Temple Bar Dublin has said it will donate all the days' takings and staff will also give up their tips in the appeal.
Meanwhile, Mr Ken Gibson, the Irish director of the Leprosy Mission has called for "urgent support". Mr Gibson, who is currently in Tamil Nadu, said the charity needed about €60,000 to rebuild 40 homes and provide nets and boats in one small fishing village.
