AFGHANISTAN: Several dozen shackled detainees from Afghanistan were expected to arrive at the US base in Cuba last night. The US military flew another plane-load of al-Qaeda and Taliban prisoners to the base, the second such flight in two days after a two-month delay to build a new prison at Guantanamo Bay.
US officials said there are 331 Afghan war captives at the base after 32 were flown in on Wednesday. One of the 300 prisoners held before Wednesday's flight arrived was sent back to Afghanistan because of mental problems, an official said.
None of the almost 200 captives still being held by the US military in Afghanistan or the detainees in Guantanamo Bay has been charged with crimes.
Meanwhile, the trial of four men for the kidnapping and murder in Pakistan of US journalist Daniel Pearl resumed briefly yesterday, after being moved out of Karachi because of security fears.
But the hearing was adjourned until Monday as some defence lawyers were absent.
A Karachi court on Tuesday ordered the trial moved out of the volatile commercial hub, where the Wall Street Journal reporter was kidnapped on January 23rd, after intelligence reports suggested there might be an attack on the city jail where the closed-door trial began in April.
