There were two more cases of BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) this month, the Department of Agriculture and Food announced yesterday.

It also revised upwards the April figures for the disease. It had reported four cases but said yesterday an additional "cohort" animal had been found in investigations in April.

The number of cases of the disease recorded here since it was identified in 1989 is 388.

The latest cases were found in dairy herds in counties Cavan and Wexford. Both cows were four years old. The Cavan herd was made up of 21 animals and the Wexford herd of 166 animals, all of which will be slaughtered and their bodies disposed of by rendering.
