The bitterly cold weather will continue over the weekend, and snow has been slow to clear in eastern counties, making roads hazardous.

Today more falls of snow can be expected in the east, south-east and midlands. These will turn to rain and sleet showers this afternoon except on high ground where wintry showers will persist.

Ms Joan Blackburn, of Met Éireann, said that while Ulster, Munster and Connacht would remain generally clear and dry, temperatures would be low, dropping to below zero at night all over the country. Severe night-time frosts would continue.

With the cold north to northeast winds daytime temperatures will reach only 2 to 6 degrees, she said.

Tomorrow the showers would begin to ease and by Sunday could have cleared to a crisp bright day.

There would be good sunny spells over the weekend. On Monday northern parts of Ulster and Connacht were at risk of some wintry showers.

The Fairyhouse race fixture tomorrow has been transferred to Thurles, and Punchestown's meeting on Sunday has been cancelled due to a snowbound track.
