The company says shedding the jobs will cost it around £2.3 billion sterling.

Motorola says the lay-offs will be carried out worldwide.

The company plans aim to resize its operations to where it was in the mid-1990s.

Motorola believes that the rapid growth in the demand for its products seen in the late 1990s probably won't return.

President Mr Ed Breen said: "The restructuring will be substantially completed when the steps we are announcing today are fully implemented.

"This means our businesses will be sized to today's economic environment and our assets will reflect today's market values."

Motorola also reaffirmed its earnings forecast for the second quarter and full-year.
