A jury in the Central Criminal Court yesterday failed to reach a verdict in a murder trial after considering its verdict for over four hours.

Mr William "Buster" Carroll (52), of no fixed abode, has denied the murder of Mr Thomas Harte (40) of Allen's Square, Ballymacthomas, Cork, at a disused house on Leitrim Street in the north of the city between May 19th and 20th, 1997.

The jury of eight women and four men told Ms Justice McGuinness that they were unable to agree on a verdict.

Mrs Justice McGuinness discharged the jury and put the case back for trial next term.
