Gardai in Kildare launched a murder inquiry yesterday into the death of a 73-yearold man, found dead at his home in Ballykelly, outside Monasterevin on Thursday evening.

The fire brigade was called to a fire in the thatched cottage and found Mr John William Boland dead. His younger brother, who lived with him and who was in the house at the time, was taken to Portlaoise hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. A post-mortem carried out yesterday revealed Mr Boland had a number of stab wounds to the body.
