Gardaí have launched a murder investigation following the fatal shooting of a man in Garryowen, Co Limerick yesterday afternoon.

Gardai said Mark Moloney (40) from Garryowen died after a number of shots were fired at him by the front seat passenger of a black sports car about 20 yards from the entrance of a dog track.

There were reports that at least five shots were fired.

A black Toyota Celica was later found burnt out in Lickadoon, Ballyneety near Drombanna. Gardaí believed it was used in the attack.

A post mortem will take place later this afternoon in the Mid Western Regional Hospital Dooradoyle.
